こもる【籠る】
1 〔外部との接触を断つ〕 shut oneself up; seclude oneself; be confined 《in…》.

●家にこもる shut oneself up [stay] indoors; keep [confine oneself] to one's house [⇒とじこもる, ひきこもる]

・近ごろ彼は家にこもりっぱなしで一歩も外に出ない. Lately, he's shut himself up in the house and never takes a step out-of-doors.

・自分の殻にこもる stay inside to one's shell; eschew contact with others.

・彼の返事には拒絶の意味がこもっていた. His reply contained an implicit refusal.

・彼女の話には実感がこもっていた. There was real feeling in what she said.

3 〔ガス・声などが外にもれない〕

●車内は空気がこもって息苦しかった. The air inside the car was stuffy and hard to breathe.

・彼の話は声がこもって聞き取りにくい. He mumbles his words so that it is hard to get what he is saying.

・台所はカレーのにおいがこもっていた. The kitchen was dense with the smell of curry.

・彼の部屋はいつもたばこの煙がこもっている. His room is always heavy with tobacco smoke.

・体内に熱がこもっている. The fever is (still) persisting internally.

・このスピーカーは低音がこもる. This speaker muffles the bass.
